The hidden work of transformation

And the importance of trusting the process...

Recently, something extraordinary happened in my garden. I noticed a hairy caterpillar making its way across the plants, happily munching away. A short while later, I spotted it settled on the wall right beside my back door. The following day, it had formed its cocoon.
For the next two weeks, I checked on it daily excited at the possibility of seeing its transformation. Nothing appeared to be happening. And yet, everything was happening beneath the surface...
Then on Sunday morning, my husband suggested we sit in the garden with a coffee and enjoy the rare sunshine. For anyone who knows me, you will know simply sitting still does not always come naturally to me... But we did. And then, suddenly Darren shouted “Claire… it’s happening.”
The butterfly was beginning to emerge.
For the next two hours, we watched in complete wonder as it slowly worked its way out. There was no rushing. No performance. No dramatic moment where everything changed instantly. Its wings gradually unfolded, strengthened and filled out. It sat then on the wall for about another hour, (while I took many photos as you can see) and then without warning, it simply spread its new wings and flew.

It struck me afterwards that this beautiful moment could have happened at any time. But it happened in this incredibly rare moment where we paused, and we got to witness it and all its magic. Sometimes, the things we most need to see can only be found when we slow down.
And of course it got me reflecting…
The hidden work of transformation
The butterfly’s journey is often used as a symbol of change, growth and transformation. What fascinates me most is not simply the moment it takes flight, but everything that happens before. The cocoon is not a place where nothing is happening. It is a place of deep transformation. From the outside, there is very little to see. But beneath the surface, an incredible process is unfolding.
I see this reflected so often in the people I have the privilege of working with.
Whether through coaching, professional development or trauma therapy, many people arrive during a period where life feels uncertain. They may feel stuck, disconnected, overwhelmed or unsure of what comes next. Often, they are looking for visible change.
They want to feel different. They want to be different. They want to move forward.
But meaningful transformation rarely happens overnight. Much of the most important work happens beneath the surface. It happens when we begin to understand ourselves more deeply. When we notice the patterns that once protected us. When we develop compassion for the parts of ourselves we have judged. When we create enough safety to explore who we are beneath the roles, expectations and adaptations we have carried.
Like the butterfly, we cannot always see the change while it is happening. That does not mean nothing is happening.
The importance of the struggle
One of the most fascinating things about a butterfly emerging is that the struggle itself is part of the process. The effort required to emerge helps strengthen the butterfly’s wings. Without that process, it would not have the strength it needs to fly.
There is a powerful parallel here for human growth. In our work with ourselves, it can be tempting to wish away the difficult parts. We want to bypass uncertainty, discomfort or struggle. We want the freedom and confidence without having to move through the messy middle. But often, it is through navigating those moments that we develop the very qualities we need for the next chapter of our lives.
Resilience. Self-trust. Awareness. Compassion. Courage.
The goal is not to eliminate every challenge. The goal is to develop the capacity to meet ourselves through it.
Coming home to yourself, not becoming someone else
Perhaps the most beautiful thing about the butterfly is that it does not become something completely new. It becomes what it was always capable of becoming. This resonates deeply with the work I do. So often, personal growth is framed as fixing ourselves or becoming a better version of ourselves.
But what if the journey is less about becoming someone new, and more about coming home to who we already are? What if beneath the masks, the coping strategies, the expectations and the pressures, there is a more authentic self waiting to emerge?
The work is not about creating a person who was never there. It is about uncovering the person who has always been there.
Trusting the process
The empty cocoon is still on my wall and I am thinking often about the butterfly.
About the quiet time in the cocoon. About the unseen transformation. About the patience required before the wings were ready.
Perhaps we all have seasons that feel a little like the cocoon. Seasons where things appear quiet. Seasons where we are reflecting, healing, learning or changing in ways that are not yet visible.
These seasons are not wasted time. They are not evidence that nothing is happening. They may be the very places where our next chapter is being formed. And when the time is right, perhaps we too will discover that we have everything we need to open our wings.
